Episode 11: Die Hefeweizen Show

In this versatile episode we will walk you through a Bavarian Hefeweizen experience.

• Clarke gives us a lesson in how to effectively communicate to a multi-billion dollar brewing company.
• We provide interesting beer related rambling about the 2006 World Cup.

• We test 3 fantastic Hefeweizen and Gonzo attempts to explain what it is like to drink it in the Hefeweizenland #1.
• Hog Dawg re-enacts his April Fools joke on us all.

And do not be scared by the German beer drinking songs, embrace them, learn to sing them, and impress your friends.

There are over 1000 Hefeweizen brands available in Bavaria, with a 90% market share.

These are the Hefeweizen tested:

Ayinger Brau-Weisse
Ayinger Brewery was founded in 1878 and is a medium size independent brewery just south of Munich, Bavaria.

Schneider Weisse
The Original. Family owned since 1872 and still using the same recipe.

Paulaner Brauerei Paulaner Hefe-Weizen
Paulaner is one of the biggest brewers in Munich and was established in 1634 by monks.

Good show. I enjoyed the rant on budwieser, they suck. Which american hefewiesens are good and which aren't? Here in New Jersey we can get saranac hefewiesen which is made like a traditional german wheat beer. Can you get it in CA? Look for it and try it, you'll like it.

Oh, and glad to hear hog dog's not leaving. You had me going after the last show.

Cool!! Let me know if you get it. I haven't tried any of the beers you guys had on the show, but I'm going to look for them this weekend. The way you described them made me very thirsty. :)

Thanks for stopping in, Artie. Good to know where you're from too. We were talking about taking a poll to find out where people who listen to the show are from. I'll try to check out the Saranac. Sometimes I'm surprised at what we can find. And by "we" I mean Hoggie Dawgie.

Cheers, and thanks again for listening.

Widmer's Hefeweizen's not that bad, actually. You should try it again. Have it at the brewery if you get a chance. It's excellent. I've heard that they bitter it with Alchemy hops.

I'm sitting here enjoying a Hooegarden as I listen to the show. Most excellent timing. The German drinking songs rock! It helps me bond with my German/Prussian heritage... that I know nothing about!

Good show! I'm not a big hefewiesen fan but you guys got me psyched enough to go out a hunt them down to give them a try. The german songs are an added bonus. The April fools joke was incredible. When you lead out with the sound bite on the last episode I never thought it would be associated with 4/1. I'm glad Dude Night isn't going away. All 5 (was it 5?) of us listeners would be bummed...

d00d, CHUD, and Bubby -- thanks for stopping by, and for your feedback on the show. I loved these beers, and I think Gonso really brought some great flavors to the bar. I could tell he was getting a little homesick while we were drinking it. He can't wait to visit his homeland again later next month.

Thanks again for listening, and for your continued support of Dude Night.

Fantastisch! I am glad you all like the episode... it is always a pleasure to taste and talk about some of our favorite beers. As they say “Thirst is worse than homesickness” [Durst ist schlimmer als Heimweh ]. No matter where you are in the world a good beer can make you feel at home. Hopefully we can bring back some different beers from our trip to Europe and do another tasting against some great American beers. Prost.
